Chance Encounter
Lisa Bielawa, composer
Susan Narucki, soprano

The Knights perform a new performance piece by Lisa Bielawa.
“Chance Encounter” will be a 30-minute site-specific musical work, co-conceived by world-renowned soprano Susan Narucki and composer Lisa Bielawa, in which Susan and 12 instruments convene, one or several at a time, in and out of the texture and context of public spaces. Susan will sing songs and arias constructed of texts we have collected in transient public spaces, thereby enacting the listener’s private (yet collective) experience of the performance space itself. Each performance ‘venue’ will require a re-mapping of the spatial and movement elements of the piece onto the new location.

The Knights at Weill Hall Carnegie
Music Forward and the Polish Cultural Institute will present The Knights Chamber Orchestra, on Friday, December 7th, 2007 at Carnegie Hall, 7:00 pm. The program will include the world premiere of a new work by Philippe Bigar, as well as works by Lutosławski, Bartók, Haydn, Torelli, and selections of traditional gypsy tunes.

Through this eclectic program, The Knights will show their passion for a wide range of musical styles, featuring the rarely heard Christmas Concerto by Italian baroque composer Giuseppe Torelli and Haydn's joyous Concertino with acclaimed pianist, Steven Beck. The program also explores folk influences in western music by highlighting works such as the Bartok Divertimento for Strings and Lutoslowski's Overture and pairing them with arrangements of traditional gypsy tunes. The selections of traditional gypsy tunes are a signatory part of this ensemble's virtuosic and bravura style. Finally, the world premiere of Philippe Bigar's Printemps Perdu is a manifestation of a continuing relationship that the composer has had with The Knights. They have performed several of Bigar's works in the past and are pleased to give this world premiere in Carnegie Hall.

The Knights' exuberant performances have been captivating audiences for the past seven years. Critics from the New York Sun say the Knights' performances are, "truly an exhilarating experience." The New York Times said, "You had the feeling of being with musicians, not just observing them." The New Yorker calls The Knights, "a little orchestra of some of New York's best strings-about-town."
Tickets are from $15 to $25 and are available online through the Carnegie Hall Box Office. To learn more, visit Carnegie Hall at:
